Hochfilzen 2017: The Women’s Sprint!

Friday was Women’s Sprint day at the Hochfilzen World Championships. Another day of calm sunny weather produced a lot of good shooting from the ladies and it was a very close race in the end.

The winner and gold medalist was Gabriela Koukalova from the Czech Republic who shot clean and won with a time of 19 minutes and 12 seconds. This is Koukalova’s first ever gold medal at a World Championships. It was a great performance and she was skiing as well as she was shooting as she beat Laura Dahlmeier into second by 4 seconds. Koukalova did have the advantage of starting later that Laura and so knew exactly what she had to do to win. That doesn’t automatically mean you can do it though so Gabi showed some great strength both physically and mentally today.

Third place was also very close. In fact there was only 0.2 of a second between getting a medal and finishing in the worst place fourth! Happily for France’s Anais Chevalier she was the one who just skied a tiny fraction faster than Italy’s Lisa Vittozzi and claimed the bronze medal.

It was the other way around this time with Vittozzi getting the time checks which shows you just how hard it is even if you know what you have to do. It was Vittozzi’s personal best result and she should be very proud of her performance. Both women also shot clean and it means that Vittozzi hasn’t missed a target yet after clearing in yesterday’s Mixed Relay too.

The top six finishers all shot clean with another Italian Federica Sanfilippo in 5th and Vanessa Hinz in 6th. Marie Dorin Habert was 7th with 1 miss, Sprint specialist Anastasiya Kuzmina was 8th, Celia Aymonier 9th and Anastasiya Merkushyna did bib23 proud finishing in 10th.

Another biathlete who achieved a personal best today was Russia’s Irina Uslugina. Home favourite Lisa Hauser was 23rd.

The Pursuit race is on Sunday and it is shaping up to be a great one with 12 biathletes starting within a minute of the leader! Don’t miss that race!
